Breakup up can be a devastating experience and you can either fall apart and suffer your agony by staying in bed and doing nothing, or you deal with it in another way and get your feelings out of your system.

You can channel your raw pain and emotions into something else.

This is exactly what Adele did when she penned her now world famous “Rolling In The Deep”, a heart-felt, gospel and blues song written after her relationship ended.

The British singer, who recently won 6 Grammy awards and went on to win 2 Brit awards a week later in the UK.

This young and gifted singer-songwriter released her second album, 21 in 2011 and it is an album filled with beautiful, sad, haunting songs – love ballads that tell of the devastation bought on by a failed relationship.

The album has gone to top the album charts in more than 26 countries and has even appeared in the 2012 of the Guinness World Records.

In the UK, 21 has now gone on to become the bestselling album of the 21st Century and has set all-time records in many countries around the world.

The songs on the album were written after her split from a boyfriend (who has yet to be named). Adele’s relationship with a man 10 years older than her, and with whom she was madly in love with, finished when he ended the relationship. She was still in love with him and the anger, heartbreak and devastating impact that this breakup had on her life is to be found in the lines of most of the songs on this album.

She started writing the songs for this album almost immediately after her relationship broke down, and instead of letting terrible effects of this breakup be the end of her, Adele channeled her sadness, depression and feelings of despair into her music.

There are many beautifully written songs on this album, but the 3 that resonate with many, especially if you have just suffered a painful breakup, are:

Rolling In The Deep
Someone Like You
Set Fire To The Rain

All three became number 1 hits all over the world.

In fact, most of the lyrics to “Someone Like You” were written in about 10 minutes when Adele found out that her ex-boyfriend had become engaged to someone else (this did not happen straight after Adele’s breakup but many months down the line). Nevertheless, the raw pain and heart that Adele must have experienced on learning of this news can be heard when you listen to this beautiful, haunting, sad love song of a love that has gone.

Lyrics to Someone Like You :
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now
I heard that your dreams came true
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you

Old friend, why are you so shy?
Ain’t like you to hold back or hide from the light

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it,
I had hoped you’d see my face, and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over,

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

You know how the time flies,
Only yesterday was the time of our lives,
We were born and raised in a summer haze,
Bound by the surprise of our glory days,

I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited,
But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it,
I had hoped you’d see my face and that you’d be reminded
That for me it isn’t over,

Never mind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead,

Nothing compares, no worries or cares,
Regrets and mistakes, they’re memories made,
Who would have known how bittersweet this would taste?

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you,
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead

Nevermind, I’ll find someone like you,
I wish nothing but the best for you, too,
Don’t forget me, I beg, I remember you said,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead,
Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.

Adele has stated since then that she would never write another song about her private feelings ever again. She feels that baring her innermost self and exposing her heartbreak is something that she will never do again because she needs to protect herself.

Having just won the US Grammy Award 2012 for the Album of the Year and also the UK Brit Award for the British Album of the Year has thrown Adele completely into the limelight and established her as a hugely successful and bestselling singer and songwriter.

Channeling The Anger And Emotion From a Breakup

Adele is not a new singer by any means and had completed her debut album, 19 back in 2008. (Her album names relate to her age at the time she created the album).

In April 2009, Adele, at the tender age of 20, had just started on her first full-blown serious relationship with a man ten years older than her.
She started working on the follow-up album (which was 21) but was not greatly inspired. Her studio sessions were going very slowly and she became disillusioned with her progress.

The only song the had been recorded was called “Take It All” and apparently it was written at a time when she was going through some problems in her relationship.
When Adele played this song for her boyfriend, they got into a bad argument which resulted in the end of their 18-month relationship.

Although she was emotionally devastated and heartbroken, the musical inspiration was back. Adele’s feelings of sadness and emotional turmoil at the abrupt and recent breakdown of her relationship meant that her feelings were raw, ripe, exposed and she could write about them, channeling all of her energy into writing new songs for the album.

The songs resonated with how she felt inside and how she felt about the relationship.

The themes of anger, heartbreak, depression and reflection are all in her songs.

Lyrics to Rolling In The Deep:

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch, it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go head and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship bare

See how I leave with every piece of you
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and its bring me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can’t help feeling

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it To the beat

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I’ve heard one of you
And I’m gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there as mine sure won’t be shared

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can’t help feeling

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it to the beat

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

We could have had it all
We could have had it all
It all, it all it all,
We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside of your hand
And you played it
To the beat

Whilst 21 has many songs that look at Adele’s relationship break up, not all the songs are based around her ex-lover or the effects of dealing with a painful breakup.

But, when talking about her ex-lover in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in April 2011, Adele said “We’d just bicker over a cup of tea or the fact that my lighter wasn’t working”. However, she acknowledged that “He made me an adult and put me on the road that I’m traveling on”.

This road has now put her on the global map for stardom and Adele is recognized wherever she goes. Gutsy, sassy, introspective and with an amazing voice that sends shivers down your spine, Adele might have worked through her heartbreak by bearing her thoughts in a public way by writing 21 but for that we are truly grateful.
